New To Corinth Baptist?

We'd love to answer any questions you might have about our church, our community, and what we believe. Please let us know if we can serve you in any way.

Who We Are

Corinth Baptist is a Southern Baptist Church following a congregational form of government.

We strive, as much as possible, to adhere to and pattern ourselves after the early New Testament church as revealed in Acts 6:3-13 and 15:22. We are an indigenous, self-governing body. Our congregation is guided and served by pastors and deacons and we manage our own affairs without influence or interference from any other body or church organization.

Vision Statement

To be a growing New Testament Church body in which all members work together in love under the Headship of Jesus Christ (Ephesians 4:11-16).

The Mission Statement Of Corinth Baptist Church

We strive to practice simultaneously these three facets of our faith:

1) Learning about our relationship with God as His people and how to grow in that relationship.
(Matthew 28:18-20; I Peter 2:2).

2) Sharing our lives as God's people by:
♦ Supporting one another in times of need
♦ Comforting one another in times of trials and sorrow
♦ Encouraging one another in our service to God
(Galatians 6:1-2; Hebrews 10:25).

3) Learning about and living up to our responsibility to the world as God's people.

Our Leaders

Greg L. Carr

Senior Pastor

The story of how I came to know Jesus begins with providentially being born into a family that would be positively impacted by the Gospel. My mother was a Christ-follower from her pre-teen years. My father prayed to receive Christ on Easter Sunday 1969. I was four at the time and was consequently raised in church and we were there “every time the doors were open.” This obviously greatly impacted my life.

I was exposed to Bible stories on a weekly, if not daily basis. When I was six years old I heard a sermon on hell. It scared me considerably but I could not “walk the aisle” due to my fear. My parents took me to visit with the Pastor immediately at the close of the service. I remember sitting on his lap answering all the questions he asked of me as my parents looked on. I got all the answers correct, prayed a simple sinner's prayer and followed in baptism. For the next 13 years, whenever I would come under conviction by the Holy Spirit, I would remind myself (and the LORD) of this meeting in the Pastor's office. Also, I would “re-dedicate” my life (generally as a young teen during summer camp) and then within a matter of weeks would be right back where I started: defeated and empty. The summer of 1984 was a pivotal time in my life. My home church participated in a Bailey Smith Crusade at one of the football stadiums in Tulsa, OK. He preached his famous “wheat and tares” sermon and I went home that night “wrestling with the LORD.” I prayed off and on the entire sleepless night and was under greater conviction than I ever had been in my life. I sensed the Holy Spirit telling me that my faith had been placed in the meeting in the Pastor's office and not in any relationship with Christ. So, the following morning, I repented of my sins the best I knew how, and asked the LORD to forgive me and to save me. I have never had any other doubts concerning my relationship with Christ. I surrendered to the ministry within a year. In 1987, I met Pamela Harrison. She and I were both Youth Interns at First Baptist Church in Tulsa, OK. She finished her last year of college the next year and then moved to Tulsa. We were married in June of 1989. Then, to better prepare for ministry, I returned to college. In order to be as faithful to the call God placed on my life as possible, I have earned a B.R.S. at Hannibal-LaGrange College and an M.A. at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, MO, focusing on the area of Christian Education. These academic accomplishments have prepared me to live out my calling to serve God's people by equipping them and their leaders to be on mission with Him. In May of 2006 our daughter Victoria Belle was born in Tulsa, OK and we adopted her at birth. She is now 16 years old and is a junior at Northeastern High School here in Elizabeth City. Pamela is a stay-at-home mom and she homeschooled Victoria until we enrolled her in public school in January of 2020.

Kristina loves teaching and sharing about the love, grace, and mercy Jesus has freely given to us through salvation and the hope found in Christ alone.

What We Believe

Beliefs

We believe that...

♦ the sovereign triune God, revealed in the scriptures, is the creator of the heavens, earth, man and all things therein (Colossians 1:16).

♦ Jesus Christ was God incarnate in the flesh (John 1:1; (5) 8:24) and that without Him all men are eternally lost (1 John 5:12; John 3:36).

♦ all mankind is born in a state of sin and estrangement from God (Romans 5:12).

♦ God in His intinite mercy and grace provided our redemption through the shed blood of His only begotten son, the Lord Jesus Christ (1 Peter 1:18-19).

♦ man can be freely justified by God's grace alone through faith and apart from the deeds of Law (Romans 3:24, 28)

♦ the Bible, both Old and New Testaments, in the original languages to be of plenary verbal inspiration without error or contradiction (II Timothy 3:16) and that God will never reveal Himself in any way contrary to His infallible word (Isaiah 8:20).

Concerning Salvation...

1. God has already done His part to restore our relationship with Him (2 Cor. 5:21)
Now He waits for each of us individually to accept the gift of salvation He has purchased and presented to us. We must accept his gift before we possessit for our own (John 1:12).

2. God's justice demands that He judge all sin (Rom. 6:23). How then can a sinful person enter heaven where God allows no sin?
The Bible says that when we accept God's gift of salvation our name is recorded in heaven (Rev. 20:15) and that we receive eternal life (Phil 4:3; Luke 10:20 and John 3:36). Jesus said that no one will get into heaven without a “spiritual birth certificate” (John 3:3).

Concerning Baptism...

Baptism is important because it is the God-given symbol of a believer's identification with Jesus Christ. Baptism is the outward demonstration of the heart commitment we have made to Him; it not only demonstrates that we believe, but also what we believe (Romans 10:9-11). Baptism is important because Jesus commanded it (Matthew 28:19-20) and genuine belief requires obedience (Luke 6:46; I John 2:3-4)

Corinth Baptist Church believes in a total immersion baptism. The Greek word “baptize” means “to immerse under water”. (Matthew 3:16, Acts 8:38-39).

Therefore, in view of this clear evidence, we believe that to be baptized according Scripture, one must be baptized by immersion. We also believe, in reference to Acts 2:41, that one must be baptized in order to become a member of the local church.

Core Values

Since we believe so strongly in the value of Scripture and the importance of the local church, we ask every member to read and understand the following commitment to signify our mutual beliefs.

We believe every person is loved and highly valued by God. (Romans 5:8, John 3:16, II Peter 3:9)

We believe doing work as a team is God's design for the church. According to Ephesians 4:11-12, all believers are expected to have some vital function in the Lord's service (I Corinthians 12:4-27). Pastors are to teach and train the church body to function according to their divine design. Each member's gifts are to be discovered, developed and deployed.

We believe the simple presentation of Jesus Christ as Savior in creative ways will impact and transform lives (Romans 1:16). We must seek to make it understandable and trust the Holy Spirit to give them conviction that it is true (I Peter 3:15) and to draw them to respond.

We believe the most effective evangelism happens through people inviting and witnessing to unchurched family and triends. People respond to those who are excited about what God is doing in their life and their church (Acts 2:41-47).

We believe that every church member should commit their self to a lifestyle of spiritual growth with honest accountability (Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 2:4247, Hebrews 10:25). It is not enough to know what to do; we must do what we know (James 1:22; 2:19-20). We believe and commit ourselves to practice the Biblical principles of marriage. It is our belief that God instituted marriage as a covenant of commitment in which companionship and sexual intimacy are only to be shared by husband and wife (Genesis 2:21-25).

We believe that God is worthy of our very best (I Corinthians 10:31). A spirit of excellence should permeate everything we do, especially for God. He is worthy of our very best and failure to do so is counterproductive to our witness to the world as God's people (Matthew 5:16).

We believe that as a member of this church body it is our stewardship responsibility to financially support its ministry. While we cannot all give the same, we can all give according to our individual ability (II Corinthians 8:12-15, 9:68).

We believe that genuine love and caring relationships are the key to spiritual life and growth of a church (John 13:34-35; John 3:11, 14; Ephesians 4:11-16). Biblical instruction for members building up one another is a clear New Testament theme. (Romans 14:19, Colossians 1:28, 3:16; I Thessalonians 4:18, 5:11; Titus 2; Hebrews 3:13, 10:24-25).

We believe a person's or church's spiritual life and power will never rise above their prayer life (James 4:1-3; John 3:22).

The New Testament teaches three levels of prayer:
♦ The secret closet (Matthew 6:6).
♦ Small group and family prayer (Matthew 18:19-20).
♦ Congregational prayer (Acts 4:31, 12:5-19).

Prayer must be the launch pad of all spiritual achievement. Without it we short circuit God's work through us (John 15:1-5); anything attempted for God without prayer is work attempted in our own human strength and ability.

We believe decision making of the church begins with a thorough study of what the Bible teaches on the subject, followed by individual and corporate prayer. After Bible study, prayer and discussion a decision will be made collectively by the church. Our goal is to protect truth, not turf (Acts 15:1-22).

We believe God is worthy of our worship. Worship is our recognition of God's supreme authority in our life, our church and the entire world. It is our thankful response for all of His provisions and blessings that we enjoy, as well as our obedience to His commands (Matthew 4:10; John 4:23).

We believe it is every Christian's responsibility to separate from any organization or activity which could cast reproach upon our Lord or the church body that we are a member of (1 Thessalonians 5:22). A good rule of action would be, “when in doubt give God the benefit”.
